Who is Saqib Ahmed Soomro?

Currently the Administrator, Karachi, SaqibAhmed Soomro comes from a long line of the influential Soomro family from Shikarpur. Born in 1961, in Shikarpur, Pakistan, to Mr. Akhtar Muhammad Soomro and Mrs. Bilquis Soomro, Saqib Ahmed Soomro is the man known and awarded for recovering the largest stolen amount in the history of the Karachi Airport. He was awarded a Gold Medal from the Government for this feat. He also bagged the SDM (Sub Divisional Magistrate) title under his belt. He is a Civil Administrator and a Doctor.

He is an ordinary man with an extraordinary combination of passions. He is a World Traveller, loves history, culture, and food, and is passionate about Wood Art Furniture. Yes, he even makes furniture. Some of his collected antique items, and some of his own hand carved furniture is a treat to check out and follow.

Family Background

His father served in the police department and retired in PSP Cadre Grade 19, in 1992. His mother, Mrs. Bilquis Soomro, was the daughter of the notable Wadero Muhammad Ibrahim Soomro. Saqib’s parents passed away in the early 2000’s.

Saqib Ahmed Soomro’s great grandfather, Sahib Dino Soomro, was a famous Noble of Shikarpur, Sindh. He owned a lot of property in Sindh, including farms and other inheritance. Saqib’s grandfather was Noor Muhammad Soomro. While he too inherited a lot from his family, he was a self-made man, who was quite famous for having worked on the famous Sukkur Bairaj. While he inherited a lot of wealth from his father, his passion was woodworks and carpentry, something that he passed on to Saqib Ahmed Soomro.

Sindh’s first premier, Allah Buksh Soomro, was Saqib’s mother’s uncle. IllahiBuksh Soomro, Saqib’s maternal uncle, was Speaker, National Assembly of Pakistan and currently remains on different Federal Ministers’ Portfolio as well. Athar Soomro was Saqib’s brother. He passed away in 2015. He looked after the family business, assets and properties, which was based in and spanned Karachi, Dubai and Canada, while he himself was based in Canada and America.

Saqib is married to Nuzhat Soomro, who is a Gold Medalist from Karachi University. While she has attained her MSc. Physiology, she is also a talented painter and is currently writing her first book of Urdu and English Prose and Poetry.

They have two kids: a son named Shafay Soomro, and a daughter named Hawwa Soomro.

Education and Career

Born in Shikarpur in 1961, he attended the local Government High School, and was not only active in sports, but was also a Debates Enthusiast at both school and college levels. He was Cricket Captain back in school, where he completed his Matriculation and Intermediate in Science from Muslim Government Sindh College, Hyderabad. He then went on to pursue B.A. Political Science from Sindh University, BSc English from Sindh University, as well as Masters Political Sciences from Sindh University. He is also CSS qualified.

Saqib then went on to become Assistant Commissioner for the Department of General Administration, Sub Divisional Magistrate in 1992, and Department of General Administration 1993.
